Martha Claire Breland learned that Judy at the Rink (2727 Prytania Street) was closing via group text with friends. Breland was taking a year off following the birth of her third child (she worked as a high school social worker) and was looking for a change. At the urging of her friends, she began talks with owner Kay Fausset in late March. (Fausset owned Judy with her husband for 24 years.)
Armed with years of retail experience—she helped at her mother's store while growing up and worked retail in high school and college—she took over Fausset's lease at the end of June. "It felt like an immediate fit after meeting Kay," Breland told Adore. "She's been so supportive in this transition."
The revamped shop, which Breland finds fun and energetic, will carry many of the same lines, but offer new and additional items. For example, Judy will now carry Ridgewalker plates to accompany the popular colorful glasses. Local art and makers will still be showcased, as well as new wedding registry gifts. Fausset even accompanied Breland to market this summer to lend her expertise—complete with wine and laughs, of course!
"Judy has such an amazing following, so I didn't want to exclude anything," Breland explained. "We're elevating what was already there with new fresh items that add some more dimension."
To celebrate, Judy is hosting a grand reopening party Thursday, September 12 from 4-7 p.m. Together with Mignon (also under new ownership), the Rink will be open for sipping and shopping. Bubbles from Bubble Tap, Cocktail & Sons' cocktails, and small bites will be available during the event. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Junior League of New Orleans Scholarship Fund.
Judy is located at The Rink, 2727 Prytania Street.
