Beignet sneakers may sound like something out of a cartoon, but they’re coming to life thanks to a local sneaker shop. In honor of Café du Monde’s  157th birthday this year, Sneaker Politics is releasing a limited version of the Saucony Shadow 5000 based off of the Café’s iconic beignets. Only 157 pairs, retailing at $120, will be released on Saturday at Sneaker Politics’s New Orleans location, and any remaining pairs will be sold online starting Sunday.

“[The sneakers are] a collaboration with a major staple in New Orleans that I have looked up to since I was a kid,” says Derek Curry, founder of Sneaker Politics. “To be able to tell this story of this iconic brand to our sneaker collector world is amazing.”

The two versions of the sneakers feature the same color pattern: powdered sugar white, a golden beignet brown, and the iconic green from Café du Monde’s world-famous awning. The shoes will even be sold in a special box that mimics the Café’s premade beignet mix down to the cooking instructions on the back. Sneaker Politics is also releasing a line of apparel to accompany the shoes, partnering with Rokit and Stance.

“The design comes from the beignet. The colors and materials are representative of what we felt like represented that the best,” says Blaine McGowan, who designed the sneakers. “I personally love smothering mine in extra powder sugar, so to have a ‘friends and family’ pair that is a little more exclusive that represents that extra powder sugar (more white), I thought that’s pretty cool.”

The release is generating a lot of hype on social media. Sneaker Politics’s initial announcement on Instagram has over 770 comments under it, and their announcement on Twitter generated over 90 retweets. Celebrity chef Aarón Sánchez, a judge on the hit show Masterchef and owner of Johnny Sánchez, even posted the shoes on his Instagram. Not bad for a local sneaker shop.

Curry says that there will be more collaborations like this to come. “We already have more projects lined up,” he says. “Can’t wait to take you guys on the next adventure and tell the world the stories of the South!”

It's hard not to adore food influences in fashion.
